New England Ski and Ride Site
Through some of my sources we have learned that Loon Mountain will be replacing the gondola with a ‘chondola’! This summer Sunday River will be having a chondola installed that will serve South Base to North Ridge. Sunday River like Loon Mountain are owned and operated by Boyne Resorts. The replacement of the lift won’t be for next season, but probably the next. That will not be the only lift change, the Kancamagus Quad will be making a move to Sugarloaf and a six person chair will be put in its place!
Boyne Resorts are making great changes to these mountains. Personally, I have been praying for the gondola to be replaced for many many years now!
Oh man, follow the link below. That had to have hurt a lot!
Well folks, that is all for lift serviced skiing and riding in New England! Yesterday, the ‘King of Spring’ Sugarloaf shut down its lifts. They still had enough to open today if they wanted to! Didn’t get there myself for the last day but I did recieve reports that it was a great time, but got a little heavy in the afternoon.
So is it over? Hell no! It is now time to earn your turns just like in October!
In celebration of May Day tomorrow, Mother Nature gave Sugarloaf EIGHT inches of snow! You read correctly, EIGHT inches of snow! Don’t believe me? Click here: SNOW at SUGARLOAF
This weekend in Vermont Jay Peak and Sugarbush will re-open for business! Get out there and enjoy skiing and riding in May!
Just think, I was getting worried with all of the rain we recieved over the last two days!
Had enough? Broken the golf clubs out? Ready to plant that garden? Regretting that ‘one more time’ you could’ve had on the slopes? Well, Jay Peak in Vermont is possibly reopening this weekend! Don’t know exactly what will be available but you may be able to ski in May at Jay! That should be their new catch phrase, ‘May at Jay’, or ‘Jay In May’! Click here:
Wildcat in New Hampshire had to call it quits last Sunday, but if you go over into Maine, Sugarloaf is still open, and will be open until this Sunday! So far they have one lift and six trails open.
See you there this Sunday!
As we move into the last weekend in April there are still places open for alpine skiing! In Maine, Sunday River and Sugarloaf, in New Hampshire Wildcat, and in Vermont Jay Peak, Mount Snow and Sugarbush still have their lifts turning. This weekend could be it for some of them, but Sugarloaf and Wildcat have stated that they will keep the season alive into May!
We’ll be out at Wildcat tomorrow, get out and enjoy!
Had to post about Bethel, Maine’s most recent record of having the tallest snow woman in the world! After leaving Sunday River on Tuesday we stopped to see the nice lady. Pretty impressive, but unfortunately she will be leaving soon. But just like Frosty, she will be back next winter!
Follow this link to read about the stats:
Hooray spring! Yes, even I am happy with the arrival of spring to our region! With the winter that we have enjoyed for the 2007-2008 season, this is a great reward for some of the best times to get out there!
Sunday River had around sixty trails open and three lifts turning on this gorgeous Tuesday. Temperatures were in the mid sixties to low seventies, some clouds rolled in after noon, and most folks (myself included) were sporting some minor sun burns by the end of the day. Primary surface conditions were LSGR, MGR, CORN, SC, and of course, some VC. First run was down American Express off of Spruce Peak, then Risky Business. From there we went over to the Sunday River Express to enjoy the trails off of Barker Mountain. Jim’s Whim had some fairly soft moguls, a lot of fun as usual. I seem to never ski this trail until April, but it’s always a nice challenge this time of season! Upper Sunday Punch, Monday Mourning, and Cascades all had great carving snow! Next were Top Gun and Right Stuff, moguls, soft snow, great time!
Skied until around two when the snow atarted to get heavy. There is still some skiing left in this season, and I did not want to push my luck!
Below are some pictures taken from the base of Barker and South Ridge Lodge. On the trails I used my helmet cam, and I will post some videos of todays outing when the season is really over! You can see that there is still a lot of cover! Just think, it was almost six months ago when I took similar pictures at the beginning of Sunday River’s season on November 9th!
Wow, what a great last day at Loon Mountain! I know that I am sounding like a broken record (or skipping CD for the younger readers), but once again there was not a cloud in the sky, really good spring conditions, and hardly anyone there! The only difference was that the temperature was higher. Actually, by two thirty in the afternoon, the temperature was eighty degrees! What a great day, what a great season! Surface conditions were primarily CORN, SC, VC, and obviously got heavier as the day went on. Too bad we couldn’t have one more day, sooooo, I’m heading over to Sunday River tomorrow!
Some pictures from the last day:
The remaining open ski area is open for one more day! Loon still has a lot of terrain open, and the weather is going to be great tomorrow! Unlike today I will wear sunscreen.
Get out there!
Luckiliy for me I did my taxes and am awaiting a refund from the Federal Government. So, that means I am worry free on the slopes of Loon Mountain where there isn’t a cloud in the sky and the temperatures are in the low 50’s! Six days left!
Then we’ll concentrate on Wildcat, Sunday River, and the ‘Loaf!
What an incredible week! Everyday has been warm, sunny, and the mountain is practically empty! This is one my vacation weeks and man, I don’t think I could’ve timed it better! Cannon on Sunday, and Loon everyday since. The coverage is great, even the snow in the trees is in good condition! Some of the ‘unofficial’ trails, I think I will wait until next year. Weather bringing the ‘R’ word is coming in this weekend, but let’s keep our fingers crossed to keep it a minimal.
Will be at Loon today, and will enjoy Cannon’s last days Saturday and Sunday. I will post pictures too!
Two great people left us this week who I would like to mention. First, my girlfriends grandfather, Raymond Bushway. Served as Fire Chief in Littleton, NH for thirty years! He was ninety years old. Below is a link to the Littleton Fire Departments website:
Second, an old friend of mine from Massachusetts, Joe Solari. He was a great guy, funny, hard working individual. I haven’t spoken to him for a long time, but I am glad I had a chance to meet him. Joe had been battling Leukemia for over a year, he was 32.
Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.
Southern New England may be seeing a lot of rain right now, but in the North Country we’re getting snow! By the time this is done we’ll have 2-4 inches! Places in Northern Vermont, Northern New Hampshire and Western Maine are getting the white stuff. Some are saying ‘End This Snow’, and I say, ‘Bring On the Endless Snow’!
